Silk Plants:

These items are ideally suited to low light or extremely low-light conditions that would be totally unsuitable for living plants. Largely constructed of polyester fibers, silk flowers and silk plants are available in many forms, textures and colors. Many silk items mimic living plants in their appearance and work well as a decorative feature on their own or in combination with living plants. The silk plant designers have also used their imagination in creating fantasy plants that do not mimic any real plants. Good quality silk items can be pricey but they perform well by not coming unglued and falling apart like their less expensive counterparts. They can be a fire hazard unless treated with fire retardant. Silk plants do not grow or provide many of the natural benefits of living plants.

Preserved Plants:

They were once living plants and trees that have been harvested by various means then treated to preserve them so that they look life-like again. Some of these plants and trees are chemically treated while they are still growing. The chemical kills the plant or tree as though it is in a state of suspended animation. They retain all of the characteristics of living plants except life. Palm trees and similar species are not compromised. Instead, the leaves are selectively harvested then preserved while leaving the original tree to continue growing. Palm leaves are attached to realistic- looking, lightweight fiberglass trunks to create mature looking palm trees up to 50 feet in height. As with the silk and replica plants, there is little routine maintenance and expenditure. Dusts can build-up on these plants if they are not routinely serviced. Fire retardants are incorporated during the treatment stage. Again, each choice has a plus or minus. The final decision should be carefully thought out before committing to expenditures as preserved plants are considerably more expensive than living plants of equal standing!!
